Moving Being

by Khandro Déchen

Summary

Khandro Déchen Tsédrüp Rolpa’i Yeshé is a Nyingma Lama who teaches in the Dzogchen lineage of Aro Lingma. Her clear, direct and detailed handbook of sKu-mNyé (also known as kum nye) enables those with determination to embark on an adventure into the otherwise hidden dimension of energy revealed through Dzogchen longdé – the series of space.

Thirty-five elemental exercises cover seven dynamic movements from each of the long-de series of symbolic animals: lion, vulture, tiger, eagle, and garuda. Aro sKu-mNye can be practised by almost anyone, whatever their body type, because the forms range from simple to challenging - from mild to strongly aerobic. The theoretical background to the exercises is explained in simple contemporary English. It is accessible to those with no experience of Vajrayana Buddhism – yet contains a wealth of footnotes which will be of be of value and interest to those who have practised intensively and studied the tradition in depth. These exercises are finely illustrated by the artist Pauline Williams. A western life-drawing style has been chosen in order to portray real-life practitioners of Aro sKu-mNyé rather than the perfect iconographic bodies of yogis and yoginis depicted in Tibetan thangka painting.

Quotations

Every human being is animated by moving patterns of energy – they are rich, vivid, and powerful. We can discover these subtle landscapes of energy within ourselves. We can experience their depth, and resonate with their vibrant harmonies. Meditating on the space of this resonance enables us to encounter dimensions of vitality that are extraordinary. Although these landscapes of internal energy were familiar territory to advanced Tibetan yogis and yoginis, they are by no means beyond our scope. Anyone who is seriously interested, and committed to an hour of daily physical exercise and meditation, can discover glimpses of the vast horizon of brilliance and presence.

Reviews

This is an extraordinary book clearly describing and illustrating the practice of sKu-mNyé (Tibetan yoga). It is refreshing to see an exercise book illustrated with images of ‘real’' people engaging proficiently in the exercises. So often yoga books show only people with ‘perfect’ bodies practising at a level it seems impossible for most of us to achieve. An invaluable and inspiring handbook.
— Ngakma Nor’dzin

Moving Being is a wonderfully illuminated handbook on sKu-mNyé, the physical exercises from the series of Dzogchen longdé. The subject is approached with the simplicity and breadth of living knowledge that offers a breathtaking clarity, and fullness, in explaining both history and use.
